Bridge-museum Opened in Norway

The architectural bureau “Bjarke Ingels Group” (BIG) has opened an unusual bridge-museum called «The Twist» in the Norwegian sculptural park Kistefos. Its remarkable architectural feature is that the building «turns» 90 degrees in the center.

Such a unique construction of the museum building is due to the features of the terrain — the museum is located on different levels of the banks of the Rannselv River. This is the first project carried out by the “BIG” bureau and Danish architect Bjarke Ingels in Norway and his first infrastructure experiment aimed to combine a building with an engineering structure.

According to Bjarke Ingels, “The Twist” is a tectonic mystery. While the bridge connects two riverbanks — a hillside and a flat forest — it “twists” 90 degrees forming a curved corrugated surface.

The 1,000-square-meter museum is located near Oslo in the Kistefos sculpture park founded in the 1990s by businessman and collector Kristen Sveas. He placed the sculptures by Anish Kapoor and Olafur Eliasson there.

The modern museum building harmoniously integrates into the park’s infrastructure serving as a bridge over the river and providing the viewer with the opportunity to continue their journey among the sculptures.
