Hydrogen-fueled self-driving buses will appear on the roads of Tartu. They will be able to carry up to six passengers. This will be the first use of such transport in the world.
A drone bus powered by low-temperature hydrogen fuel has been developed by the Estonian company Auve Tech and the University of Tartu. The vehicle has been tested by the Estonian Road Administration (ERA) and has been authorised to drive on public roads.
The shuttle bus can accommodate up to 6 passengers. It is autonomous, but the bus can be controlled remotely. It is considered as a means of travel “the last mile” — from major transport hubs home.
According to Johannes Mossov, CEO of Auve Tech, these hydrogen buses are an environmentally friendly alternative to personal cars.
«Hydrogen acts as an energy source in the vehicle, and the only by-products are evaporated water and heat. Fast charging allows for more working hours, increasing efficiency and providing an opportunity to integrate autonomous vehicles into our daily lives», notes Mossov.
